Georgia Southwestern outfielder Byron Haynes belted three home
runs and had seven RBI in the Hurricanes sweep (9-6, 4-1) of West
Georgia on Saturday evening at Hurricane Stadium.
GAME 1: GSW 9, UWG 6
Haynes wasted no time attacking Wolves pitching, hitting his
first home run, a three-run shot to left, in his first at bat to
give GSW a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. He added a solo home
run in the fifth.
GSW led 6-1 after six innings and appeared to be crusing to a
win in the opener before West Georgia (5-11) rallied for five runs
in the top of the seventh to tie the score.
The score remained 6-6 until the bottom of the eighth when GSW
closed out the scoring with a three-run frame, highlighted by Kevin
Carroll's game-winning RBI double.
Chris Carroll (1-0) picked up his first win of the season by
throwing two innings of scoreless relief. GSW starter Ryan Lackey
tossed 6.1 innings and allowed four runs in his no-decision effort.
GAME 2: GSW 4, UWG 1
The second game of the twinbill was a pitcher's duel with a 1-1
score until the bottom of the fifth inning. That's when Haynes
struck again, rocketing his third home run of the evening, another
three-run round-tripper, to the top of the batting cage netting
beyond the left field fence.
That was all the insurance GSW starter Jody Sellars needed.
Sellars finished the game scattering seven hits while walking two
and striking out three. The run surrendered in the first inning was
unearned, as the result of a passed ball, so Sellars' ERA remains
at 0.00 for the 2010 season. In 19 innings of work, Sellars is 3-0
and has not allowed an earned run.
Southwestern (6-4) is back in action on Wednesday, hosting
Auburn-Montgomery in a non-conference game starting at 5 p.m.
