Stephen Cox is entering his third season as an assistant coachfor the Georgia Southwestern Men’s Basketball program and histhird season as Georgia Southwestern’s Cross Country HeadCoach.
As a member of Head Coach Mike Leeder’s staff, Cox hasbeen part of the turnaround of the men’s basketball program.The 2010-11 campaign saw a 13 win improvement, and it producedseveral firsts in school history, including: first NCAA DivisionII men's basketball national ranking, first Peach BeltConference division title in any sport, first NCAA Division IINational Tournament appearance in any sport. GSW spent fiveweeks ranked in the Top 25, reaching as high as No. 16, andfinished the season with a 20-9 record.
Cox was an assistant coach at Savannah State (2008-09) andMercer (2007-08) prior to his arrival at Georgia Southwestern. Hiscoaching career began at Santa Fe Community College as an assistantmen's basketball coach. From 2004 to 2007 he helped guide theGainesville, Fla., team to two Mid-Florida ConferenceChampionships. In 2007, SFCC claimed the conference title with anoverall record of 26-5, including a league record of 14-1.
He began his basketball playing career at Middle Georgia Collegein Cochran, where he led the Warriors to the 2002 GJCAA StateChampionship game. He wrapped up his junior college playing daysranked in the top 20 in both scoring and field goal percentage inthe Georgia Junior College Athletic Association. Cox played hisfinal two seasons of collegiate basketball at Clayton State, wherehe helped lead the Lakers to their first-ever top 20 nationalranking.
During Cox's tenure as Head Cross Country Coach, the Lady 'Caneshave seen their best conference finish in program history.
The Peachtree City, Ga. native received his Bachelor of BusinessAdministration degree from Clayton State in 2004 and earned aMaster of Education degree from Grand Canyon University in2006.
