Elite Eight Bound: Hurricanes Charge Into Match Play With Blazing Final Round in Desert

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — Georgia Southwestern State University delivered one of the best rounds in program history Wednesday, firing a 13-under 275 in the final round to secure a fifth-place finish and advance to medal match play at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

The Hurricanes closed stroke play at 17-under par for the tournament, climbing three spots on the final day and finishing among the top eight teams that advanced into the national championship bracket. GSW's final-round 275 was just two strokes shy of the program's best 18-hole score.

It marks the third time in the past six seasons that Georgia Southwestern has advanced to medal match play at the NCAA Championships. The Hurricanes reached the national semifinals in 2022 and finished as national runner-up in 2021.

GSW will face the second-ranked team in the country, Lee University, in the national quarterfinals Thursday beginning at 11:20 a.m. EDT. The teams will play 18 holes, with the winner advancing immediately into the semifinals later that afternoon.

No. 3-ranked Florida Southern College claimed the stroke play title at 35-under par, followed by University of Missouri–St. Louis at 27-under. Wingate University finished third at 25-under, while Lee placed fourth at 18-under. GSW rounded out the top five at 17-under, just ahead of Columbus State University at 16-under.

The Hurricanes were led by a balanced lineup Wednesday, highlighted by a career round from Sam Brown. Brown carded a bogey-free 5-under 67 to climb into a tie for 18th individually at 5-under for the tournament. He played his opening nine in 3-under par with consecutive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes, and added two more birdies on the back to post the low round of the day for GSW.

Oscar Hammar and Jordan Jones each added 4-under 68s during the final round. Hammar delivered five birdies in the final round with his lone bogey coming on the 18th. He finished tied for 28th overall at 3-under for the championship, while Jones rebounded from a difficult second round to finish tied for 51st at 1-over overall after recording six birdies Wednesday.

Sacha Corlouer closed with an even-par 72 and finished tied for 35th at 2-under for the tournament, while Stefan Rojas posted the Hurricanes lone eagle of the day and carded a 2-over 74.

GSW's resiliency in Round 2 and consistency on the par 4s throughout the week proved critical in advancing to match play. The Hurricanes ranked third in the field in par-4 scoring at 4.15 and finished second overall in total pars with 164. Corlouer also tied for ninth individually in par-4 scoring for the tournament at even par.
