AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's tennis team came up just short Friday afternoon, falling 4-3 to Clark Atlanta University at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.
The Lady Hurricanes opened the match strong, claiming the doubles point with victories on the top two courts.
Mariana Sorrilha and
Mabry Bowron cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Luiza Rodrigues and
Luana Borini followed with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 to secure the early 1-0 advantage for GSW.
Clark Atlanta responded in singles play, winning four of the six courts to pull ahead and ultimately secure the match.
Sorrilha delivered one of the highlights of the afternoon for GSW, dominating her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The victory marked her team-leading second singles win of the season.
Rodrigues battled in the most dramatic match of the day at No. 1 singles. After splitting the first two sets, the contest was decided by a super tiebreak in the third, where Clark Atlanta prevailed 10-3 to clinch the point.
The Panthers also picked up wins at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to complete the comeback.
With the victory, Clark Atlanta improved to 6-3 on the season and has now won three of the last four meetings between the two programs.
GSW fell to 1-3 overall and will look to bounce back in its next matchup.
