PENSACOLA, Fla. — Georgia Southwestern was unable to generate any run-scoring offense Wednesday afternoon as No. 10 University of West Florida secured a 10-0 victory at Jim Spooner Field.
The loss drops the Hurricanes to 15-13 on the season, while West Florida improves to 20-6. The Argonauts have now won four straight meetings between the programs, all coming in Pensacola.
Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome
GSW threatened in the opening inning, putting a runner on third after a leadoff single by
Drake Harman and a sacrifice bunt from
Kelsen Johnson, but the Hurricanes were unable to capitalize.
West Florida built an early lead and steadily added to it throughout the afternoon, keeping the Hurricanes off the scoreboard despite GSW putting a runner on base in every inning but the ninth.
Limited Chances for Hurricanes
GSW scattered five hits on the day, with
Devon Murphy leading the way with a pair of singles.
Josh McDonald,
Drew Reaves, and Harman each added a hit, while
Carson Shaw reached base twice via walks.
Despite putting runners on in several innings, GSW was unable to deliver the timely hit needed to break through.
Pitching Notes
The game marked the season debut for freshman
Jake Howell, who drew the start for the Hurricanes.
Out of the bullpen,
Carter Hennon turned in the longest outing of his season, working 1 1/3 innings while navigating traffic, not allowing an earned run and keeping the game from further getting out of hand during his stretch.
Wade Johnson provided some stability in the middle innings, logging 3 2/3 frames to help bridge the gap for the pitching staff.
Tristan Legg threw a scoreless 1 1/3 innings and
Jensen Seculer pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Only four of UWF's 10 runs were earned due to three GSW errors.
