MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Georgia Southwestern dropped both games of a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon to No. 6 Auburn University at Montgomery at the AUM Softball Complex. The Warhawks claimed an 8-0 victory in six innings in the opener before finishing the sweep with a 10-0 win in five innings in the nightcap.
The losses extend Auburn Montgomery's recent success in the series. The Warhawks have now won six consecutive games against the Hurricanes and 10 of the last 11 meetings between the two programs. Both contests were ended early on Tuesday due to the run rule, marking the first time a game has been called early in the series since the 2019 season.
Georgia Southwestern moves to 9-11 overall, while Auburn Montgomery improves to 19-4.
Game 1: AUM 8, GSW 0 (6 innings)
Auburn Montgomery used timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to take control in the opener, scoring in four different innings on the way to an 8-0 win.
The Warhawks broke through in the third inning when Reese Cauley singled home Rebecca Komers for the game's first run.
AUM extended its lead in the fourth. Chloe Baynes delivered an RBI single before Komers followed with a two-run double to push the advantage to 4-0.
The Warhawks added three more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to end the game early.
Georgia Southwestern managed just one hit against Cauley, who struck out nine over six innings to earn the victory.
Riley Ernst recorded the Hurricanes' lone hit with a single in the third inning.
Game 2: AUM 10, GSW 0 (5 innings)
The Warhawks struck quickly in Game 2, taking advantage of defensive miscues to build an early lead.
After Chloe Baynes opened the game with a walk and stolen base, a bunt single by Gabbi Barnowsky helped produce two runs following a throwing error. Karris Rhine later added an RBI single as AUM built a 3-0 advantage in the first inning.
The score remained unchanged until the fourth, when Auburn Montgomery erupted for seven runs on eight hits. Baynes highlighted the inning with a two-run triple, while Barnowsky, Rebecca Komers, Rhine, Ariana Machado, and Meredith Kellum each drove in runs during the rally.
Georgia Southwestern collected two hits in the game, including a first-inning single from
Kendall Huelsman and a double by
Baelee Garland in the fifth.
Sydni Free tossed a two-hit shutout for AUM, striking out four across five innings.
