Lady Hurricanes Triumph in Home Opener, 4-3 Over ABAC

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's tennis team opened its home season with a 4-3 victory over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Friday afternoon at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex. The Lady Hurricanes rallied in singles play to clinch the win, giving the Americus crowd a thrilling start to the season.

After dropping a pair of doubles matches to lose the team point, GSW headed into singles down 1-0, but Mariana Sorrilha, Luana Borini, and Mabry Bowron delivered clutch performances, combining precision and poise to swing the momentum in the Lady Hurricanes' favor. Sorrilha captured a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-1), Borini controlled No. 3 singles (6-2, 7-6), and Bowron battled through a nail-biting three-set victory at No. 4 singles (6-4, 6-7, 7-5).

Luiza Rodrigues gave a valiant effort at No. 1 singles, taking a third-set tiebreak but ultimately falling 5-7, 6-0, 5-7. Natalia Paiva faced a tough loss at No. 5 singles, while EmmaRae Smith secured a point by default at No. 6 singles when ABAC's player withdrew.

The Lady Hurricanes now stand at 1-1 on the season and will have two weeks to prepare for their next match, Feb. 20, at Shorter University.
