Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hozumi Sets Steals Record as GSW Rolls to 95-49 Win

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team delivered one of the most complete and explosive performances of its NCAA era on Saturday afternoon, overwhelming the University of Fort Lauderdale, 95-49, inside the Storm Dome to even its record at 2-2. The Hurricanes controlled every quarter, posted their highest scoring output since December 30, 2023, and rode a historic all-around performance from junior guard Tiara Hozumi.

Hozumi set the tone for a relentless afternoon by breaking the school's NCAA-era record with nine steals, while also dishing out 12 assists - the third-highest single-game total in program history.

GSW Races Out to 29-Point First Quarter

The Hurricanes set the tone instantly, scoring the first 12 points of the game and forcing five turnovers in the opening three minutes. GSW shot a blistering 60 percent in the first quarter, turned defense into immediate offense, and built a 29-11 lead after just 10 minutes.

Hozumi was everywhere - jumping passing lanes, initiating fast breaks, and finding open teammates - while Ray'ven Robinson and Madison Brittle attacked the basket for early momentum.

Offense Clicks From Every Angle

GSW never cooled off. Behind crisp ball movement and relentless pressure on the rim, the Hurricanes posted quarter totals of 29, 23, 25, and 18, while shooting:
  • 50.6% from the field (39-for-77)
  • 66 points in the paint
  • 43 fast-break points
  • 35 points off turnovers
  • 48 rebounds
Robinson again led with efficient scoring, finishing with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Brittle added 15 points and six rebounds, and Kassidy Neal delivered 10 points and six boards in just 12 minutes.

Sophomore Nini Ovalles lit up the second quarter and early third with a career-high 19 points, including four 3-pointers, while Hannah Simmons contributed seven points and six rebounds.

Hozumi's Record-Setting Afternoon

Hozumi's stat line - 8 points, 12 assists, 9 steals, 4 rebounds - was one of the most dominant pure floor-general performances in GSW's NCAA history.

Her 9 steals:
  • Most in a single game in the program's NCAA era
  • Came in every quarter
  • Fueled a pressure-heavy defensive effort that produced 17 team steals
Her 12 assists:
  • Third-most in school history
  • Powered seven different GSW players who finished with at least seven points
A Complete Team Statement

GSW never trailed and never allowed Fort Lauderdale to mount a run larger than four points. The Hurricanes led by 30 midway through the third quarter, by 40 entering the fourth, and by as many as 46 in the final minute.

It was the kind of performance that showed the depth, tempo, and defensive ceiling of a roster continuing to grow its identity.
