AMERICUS, Ga. -- Georgia Southwestern (29-18) defeated Albany State (30-6) in both games of their doubleheader on Wednesday night. The first game of the doubleheader was a pitchers duel with Hannah Holloway leading the Hurricanes to victory allowing just one run on three hits. Zoe Willis had a homerun in the first game that opened up the scoring in the contest. Katelyn Wood, the Peach Belt's RBI leader added another to her total in the first game. Morgan Mullin had an RBI double in the game and Henderson Hurdle had three hits and two stolen bases in the contest.
In the second game of the doubleheader GSW jumped on the Rams early scoring two runs in the first two innings, the Rams would add one in the first and one in the second to make it a 4-2 ballgame. That score would hold until the fifth when the Lady Canes came alive led by aggressive baserunning late in the game. The Lady Canes tallied 10 stolen bases in the second game and scored three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth to get the run-rule victory and complete the sweep over Albany State. Zoe Willis (W, 4-4) set a program record for strikeouts in a game, striking out 14 Albany State batters in her complete game win. This was Willis's first start in the circle since March 26th against USC Aiken. The 14 strikeouts broke the previous record of 11 set by Jennifer Jernigan in Feb. 2020.
The Lady Canes will try to keep up the momentum when they head to Augusta University for their second to last Peach Belt series of the season.
