AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern starting pitcher Jarrod Crum threw eight scoreless innings Wednesday evening at Hurricane Stadium and guided GSW to an 8-0 win over Valdosta State University.
The Hurricanes snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 5-10 this spring while Valdosta State dropped to 11-5. GSW has won three of its last five against the Blazers.
The first three GSW batters walked to open the game and a sacrifice fly by Jared Jones brought home Alex Kranick for what would prove to be the game-winning run. Evan Alderman scored on the next at bat off a ground out by Zach Barron.
Josh Logan tacked on a RBI single in the third inning.
Will Redding smashed his first home run of the season in the fifth, a two-run shot, to put GSW ahead, 5-0. Barron plated Jones to pick up his second RBI of the game as part of the Hurricanes four-run frame.
Kranick brought Aaron Crowe around to score with a single in the eighth for the final run of the evening.
Kranick and Logan collected two hits apiece in the game to lead GSW batters.
Crum (1-2) held Valdosta State to three hits, walked one and struck out seven. Mitch Holloway preserved the shutout with a scoreless ninth.
Valdosta State used six pitchers in the game. Starter Cody Harwell (0-2) walked three before exiting. GSW scored three runs off Daniel Williams, one off Cooper Cain and one off Quinton Forrester.
The Hurricanes resume Peach Belt Conference play Friday at Augusta University. First pitch of the three-game series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
