Clayton State Snaps Hurricanes Winning Streak

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team fell behind by 16 points early in the first half and could never recover as Clayton State upended the Hurricanes, 90-62, in a Peach Belt Conference matchup Wednesday evening in the Storm Dome.

The Hurricanes had their two-game winning streak snapped to fall to 6-11 overall this season, 4-6 in the PBC, while Clayton State won its third straight game and improved to 11-8, 6-4 in conference.

It took Clayton State only four minutes to build a 19-3 lead and from there the Lakers cruised to halftime, up 48-20 at the break.

GSW was unable to get any closer than 19 points (71-52) the rest of the way.

Clayton State finished with a lopsided advantage in field goal percentage (59-44), assists (21-9) and points in the paint (46-28). The Hurricanes committed 11 more turnovers.

GSW had two players score in double digits. Brandon Price posted a game-high 22 points and Tevin Wise finished with 14. Rakeem Hicks grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Lakers had four of their five starters score in double digits. Christoff Nairn drained 8 of 11 shots, including 4 of 7 from behind the arc, en route to his 22 points. Jaumonee Byrd added 13 points and a team-best five boards while Dantez Bennamon had 12 points and five assists. Alfonso Davis chipped in 10 points.

The Hurricanes travel to Milledgeville on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. game against Georgia College.
