AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team allowed six runs over the final three innings of a disappointing 6-1 loss to Trinity Baptist College in Opening Day action Tuesday at Hurricane Stadium.

Southwestern has lost four of its last five season openers. Trinity (1-2) picked up its first victory of the spring.

GSW grabbed the lead in the third inning when Brett Burgess doubled to left field and brought Evan Alderman around from first.

Trinity scored what would prove to be the game-winning run in the seventh inning when a pair of runners crossed the plate after a GSW fielding error. The Eagles added two more runs in the eighth and another pair in the ninth.

Davey King went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead GSW. Zach Barron finished 2-for-4 with a double. Hurricane batters were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Quirino Esquivel and Jake Frisosky led TBC with three hits apiece. Frisosky had a pair of RBIs. Cody Ragland collected two hits and scored twice.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision.

Kyle Spinks opened for GSW and threw two scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out two before making way for Kyle Romstadt who tossed two scoreless innings of his own. Romstadt did not walk a batter and struck out five. Earl Dupree (0-1) took the loss after surrendering a pair of runs during his 2 2/3 innings on the hill. Dupree walked three and struck out two. Lance Shelton pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up four runs - two earned - off four hits. Jordan McIlwain kept the Eagles off the board with the final two outs in the ninth.

TBC starter T.J. Lanning threw five innings, held GSW to one run and allowed five hits. Matt Carter (1-0) tossed the final four frames.

Southwestern welcomes in Montreat College for three-game weekend series starting with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
