MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and added four more in the second en route to a 12-7 victory over Auburn Montgomery on Wednesday evening at the AUM Baseball Complex.
GSW improved its record to 2-1 this spring while AUM suffered its first defeat and dropped to 3-1.
Stephen Eldridge put the Hurricanes on the board in the first inning with a three-run double to right-center field that scored Josh Sanders, Les Cromer and Jarrod Taylor. Zach Moss brought Eldridge around to score two batters later with a double of his own, this one to left center.
In the second frame, Cromer drove in Devyn Newberry, who singled to open the inning, and Sanders with a RBI single. Cromer would eventually score the Hurricanes seventh run of the ballgame and Moss drove home the final run of the inning with a RBI single.
Newberry opened the third inning with single and he would score again, once again with Sanders, but this time on Taylor's two-run single. GSW led 10-4 after three innings.
The Hurricanes added a run in the fourth inning and another in the seventh to extend the lead to 12-4. AUM pushed across its final three runs over the last three innings, including a pair in the ninth.
While the Warhawks committed fiver errors in the game, only one was made during GSW's run barrage over the first three innings.
The Hurricanes tallied 13 hits Wednesday night and were 5-for-10 with a runner on third base.
Moss led all batters with three hits in the contest and he collected a pair of RBIs. Cromer, Taylor, Eldridge and Moss added two hits apiece. Eldridge led with a game-high three RBIs.
The Warhawks had a trio of batters finish with two hits apiece.
Dylan Brown (1-0) tossed the opening four innings for GSW and allowed four runs and five hits before making way for Zac Whittmus and Zach Smith. Whittmus threw three innings and held AUM to one run. Smith pitched the final two frames and allowed two runs.
Southwestern jumps back on the road for a weekend series at West Alabama which begins Friday at 6 p.m.
