GSW Unable To Match Montevallo Goals In Second Half

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – A pair of second-half goals by the University of Montevallo men's soccer team was the difference as Georgia Southwestern was defeated, 2-0, on Wednesday evening at Varsity Field.

GSW falls to 3-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the Peach Belt Conference after suffering their fifth-straight loss. Montevallo has won two in a row and improves to 6-3-3 overall and 3-2-2 in PBC play.

The Hurricanes took more shots than Montevallo (6-4) over the opening 45 minutes, but neither side could find the back of the net and the match remained scoreless into the halftime break.

Josh Keller punched in what would prove to be the game winner for the Falcons in the 56th minute when he was able to score from an awkward angle on a bouncing ball in the box from Ram Gilad.

Montevallo added the insurance goal in the 79th minute when Steven Didik put a ball in the back of the net after clanging it off the right post. Kevin Francis was credited with the assist.

GSW finished with three shots on goal compared to six by the Falcons. Ilja Golubevs, Brennan Bauschka and Ron Calle had one shot on goal apiece for the Hurricanes.

Montevallo held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Garrett Blamire saved four in goal for GSW.

Yannic Horn, the reigning PBC Goalkeeper of the Week, stopped three for Montevallo for his second-straight clean sheet.

Southwestern travels to No. 5 Young Harris on Saturday for an 7:30 p.m. match against the Mountain Lions.
