The Georgia Southwestern soccer teams combined to go 0-for-2 on
Friday afternoon at Hurricane Field for Opening Day 2010. The
Lady Hurricanes were defeated 3-1 by Thomas University in the early
match, while the men fell 3-0 to Eckerd College in the nightcap.
THOMAS 3, GSW WOMEN 1
Thomas broke a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute and went on to the 3-1
victory over Georgia Southwestern on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Night Hawks (2-1) struck first in the contest when
Carina Spengler drilled a shot into the top right corner of the net
from 30 yards out just 1:16 into the contest to give TU a 1-0
advantage.
The Lady Hurricanes tied the match at the 60:01 mark when
Carolann Simpson punched a rebound in front of the goal between the
pipes for her first NCAA goal.
Thomas answered 80 seconds later with a goal from Aida
Vojnikovic off a breakaway pass from Shelby Gillis.
Spengler finished the scoring by notching her second goal in the
81st minute, a header that came from Hannah Claesson.
Courtney Allison made nine saves for GSW in her debut. The Lady
'Canes were outshot 19-4.
Southwestern returns to action on Sunday with a noon match at
home against Eckerd College.
ECKERD 3, GSW MEN 0
The visiting Tritons spoiled Georgia Southwestern's season
opener, defeating the Hurricanes, 3-0.
Alex Patterson opened the scoring in the 38th minute for Eckerd
off a cross from teammate Anthony Arico. The score remained 1-0
until the second half when EC added to their lead with goals in the
54th and 60th minutes.
GSW goalkeeper David Porley made six saves in the match.
Southwestern was outshot 18-3.
The Hurricanes meet fifth-ranked Tampa on Sunday in
Columbus.
