Bud Long went 3-for-4 with a three-run double and a three-run
home run to lead Georgia Southwestern to a 17-8 win and a Peach
Belt Conference series sweep of Montevallo on Sunday afternoon at
Hurricane Stadium. GSW hitters erupted for 44 runs and 41 hits in
the three-game set.
On Sunday afternoon, it was UM that took the early lead with
four runs in the first inning.
The 'Canes cut the lead to one with three runs in the
bottom of the second. Shane Doyle poked a two-run single up the
middle to score Paschel Poston and Byron Haynes. Chris Lingham beat
out an infield single to short to score Jared Allen.
Montevallo extended their advantage to 6-3 with a two-run fourth
inning.
Long tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a three-run
blast over the left field wall. Zack Stanton, after reaching base
with a double, eventually scored off a pair of wild pitches to give
the 'Canes their first lead of the game.
Montevallo tied things up with a run in the top of the fifth.
Southwestern posted another four-run frame to take the lead for
good in the bottom of the fifth when Long struck again; this time
with a three-run double down the left field line to score Doyle,
Allen and Kevin Carroll.
The Hurricanes put the game out of reach in the seventh with a
five-run, five-hit inning. Stanton, Trent Dooley, Haynes and Poston
collected RBI hits.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning to round out the
scoring.
Lingham joined Long with three hits, going 3-for-6 with a RBI.
Stanton, Haynes, Poston and Doyle had two hits apiece.
Andy Revell went 3-for-4 to lead Montevallo at the plate. Duston
Daugherty and Cory Luckie had two hits apiece.
Starters Travis Barrett for GSW and Joey Noro of Montevallo did
not factor into the decisions.
Corey Hawes (1-0) picked up his first win for GSW with 2.2
innings of scoreless relief.
Kyle Johanson (0-1) allowed two runs in his appearance in the
fifth inning to take the loss for UM.
Southwestern travels to West Georgia on Thursday for a 5:00 p.m.
game.
