Zack Stanton cleared the bases in the third inning with a grand
slam to put the Georgia Southwestern baseball team ahead 6-2 and
the Hurricanes went on to a 7-5 win over Brewton-Parker on Tuesday
evening at the friendly confines of Hurricane Stadium - where GSW
is 9-1 this season.
Stanton has homered in back-to-back games with six RBIs.
Kevin Carroll was a perfect 3-for-3 on Tuesday leading GSW at
the plate with a home run, walk, run scored and three RBIs.
It was Brewton-Parker taking the early lead in the game when
Robby Kuzdale belted a two-run home run to right field in the first
inning to put BPC ahead 2-0.
The Hurricanes tied things up in the second when Carroll
delivered a two-out, two-run home run (see picture
below) to left field, driving in Paschel Poston, who
reached on a single an at bat earlier.
GSW went up 7-2 after a five-run inning in the third,
highlighted by Stanton's grand slam. Carroll added an
insurance run with another two-out RBI when he drove in Trent
Dooley with a single through the left side of the infield.
The visiting Barons scored two runs in the sixth after a pair of
walks and a double from Brandon Stevens. BPC loaded the bases with
one out in the eighth, but could only push across their final run
of the game on a fielder's choice.
Hurricane starter Travis Barrett (2-0) settled in after the
two-run first to throw 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and four
runs. BPC could only muster an unearned run during Corey
Hawes' 2.1 innings of relief. Chris Carroll came on to throw
a scoreless ninth to secure his third save of the spring.
Daniel Eaton (2-2) pitched the first two innings and allowed
three runs off two hits to take the loss for Brewton-Parker (19-7).
BPC threw six pitchers in the contest.
The Hurricanes (11-6) travel to Albany State on Thursday for a 5
p.m. game.
