The Georgia Southwestern softball team was swept in a Saturday
evening doubleheader (11-0, 3-1) by No. 12 Augusta State at Lady
'Canes Field.
Gabby Buck finished the day 2-for-4 with a solo home run to lead
Southwestern at the plate. Buck and Brooke McLemore were the only
GSW hitters to pick up a hit in both games.
GAME 1: #12 AUGUSTA STATE 11, GSW 0 (5 inn.)
Augusta State collected two-run and three-run home runs in the
first inning and added a grand slam in the third to put game 1 away
early.
The Jaguars scored six runs in the first, a single run in the
second and their final four runs in the third.
Sara DeMuth (9-2) threw four scoreless innings for ASU,
scattering two hits while walking one and striking out three.
Katie Mueller (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season for
GSW.
GAME 2: #12 AUGUSTA STATE 3, GSW 1
Southwestern surrendered only two hits through four innings in
the nightcap, unfortunately they came in the form of back-to-back
solo home runs in the first to give ASU a 2-0 lead.
The Jaguars added an unearned run off a GSW fielding error in
the third to extend the lead to 3-0.
THe Lady Hurricanes scored their first run of the night in the
fourth inning on Buck's solo home run to center field.
GSW's best opportunities to score the rest of the way came in
the fourth when Katie Wooten was left stranded on second and in the
sixth when Lyndie Duff was left on third.
Augusta State (20-6, 6-0 PBC) starter Emily Corish (7-3)
threw six innings, scattered five hits, allowed one run and struck
out five. Kimberly Kennedy earned the save (2) when she struck out
the side in the seventh.
Mariko Nomura (5-10) went all seven innings for GSW, scattering
six hits while allowing the three runs (two earned) with two walks
and three strikeouts.
The Lady Hurricanes (11-20, 1-7) host No. 25 Carson-Newman
in a rescheduled doubleheader on Wednesday (3/17) at 3 p.m.
