Georgia Southwestern head women's basketball coach Kelly Britsky
earned her 100th career NCAA coaching victory as the Lady
Hurricanes improved to 2-0 in the Peach Belt Conference with a
60-52 win over Montevallo at the Storm Dome on Saturday afternoon.
GSW jumped out to a 10-4 advantage, capped off by a Brandi
Burris three-pointer, and held the lead over the opening 10 minutes
of the game.
Montevallo (7-5, 0-2 PBC) took their first lead of the contest
with 7:59 remaining in the first half (17-15). The Lady Hurricanes
answered with a 12-2 run over the following six minutes before
taking a 28-25 lead into the halftime break.
The second half saw similar runs as Southwestern opened their
advantage to seven points (37-30) before Montevallo went on 10-2
run to take a 40-39 lead with 12:01 remaining. The two teams traded
baskets for the next eight minutes but the Lady Hurricanes used
another run to take a 57-51 lead with just two minutes to play in
the game. A few free throws later the game ended with the Lady
Hurricanes ahead, 60-52.
GSW finished the game shooting 32.8 percent from the floor
(20-of-61), including 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from beyond the arc,
while holding Montevallo to 31.7 percent (19-of-60) and 20 percent
from three-point range (4-of-20).
Southwestern outrebounded UM (50-39) and held a 19-11 points off
turnovers advantage.
Terra Branch led GSW with a game-high 14 points. Burris and
Nadirah Gardner added 10 points apiece. Whitley Wiltz and Kanita
Holloway each pulled down nine boards.
Carrie Parrott and Kristen Seigenthaler scored 14 points apiece
for Montevallo.
With the win on Saturday, the Lady 'Canes have recorded
back-to-back Peach Belt Conference victories for the first time in
school history.
GSW (7-5, 2-0) looks to remain undefeated in PBC play when they
travel to Georgia College on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
