Hurricanes notch first 'W'

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team scored three goals over an 11 minute span in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory over Harding University on Sunday afternoon at the Walden Soccer Complex.

Ross Sellers opened the scoring in the 69th minute when he beat HU goalkeeper Andrew Flesher in a one-on-one opportunity off a lead pass down the middle from Ethan Vick.

Michael Moses added a penalty kick goal in the 71st minute and Taylor Jennings made it 3-0 in the 80th minute when he cleanly picked a Jesse Davis pass out of the air in the middle of the box and sent it inside the left pipe to insure the 'Canes first win of the 2009 season.

It was the first goal of the year for all three Hurricane players.

Harding (2-7) pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute as Drew Nowlin scored his team-leading third goal of the season on a penalty kick.

David Porley finished with six saves for GSW. Georgia Southwestern outshot Harding 13-12.

Sunday's match was the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Southwestern (1-7) opens Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday (9/26) at 3:30 p.m. in Americus against defending PBC champions Francis Marion.
