Freshman southpaw Jessica Martin silenced the Anderson
University bats by throwing a no-hitter in game two of the
Lady 'Canes doubleheader in Anderson, S.C. on Monday
afternoon. Anderson won the first game, 7-4. GSW took
the second game, 1-0.
Martin (2-5) struck out five and walked four in the win.
"Jessica was more dominant than that," said coach Eddie Ward.
"Most of her outs were pop-ups in the infield or ground-outs. But
who cares when you no hit somebody."
The game's only run came in the fourth inning when Heather
Chambers scored on a Brandi Pratt slow-roller on a fielder's
choice.
GSW (7-20) managed three hits in the game.
In the first game, Anderson (14-13) scored all seven of its runs
in the third and fourth innings. Down 7-4, GSW couldn't score with
the bases loaded in the sixth and runners on second and third in
the seventh.
"We're constantly getting ourselves behind the eight ball by not
scoring until late," said Ward. "We didn't come in and score until
the fifth, and then we were still waiting for timely hitting. Our
offensive woes continued, and I guess it was about time our
pitching failed a little bit because it's been really good. It was
one of those days where we weren't good until the second ball
game."
Gabby Buck led the Lady Hurricanes going 3-for-4, and Shea
Weaver and Katie Wooten each had two hits in the game.
Anna Dankewich's RBI-double pulled GSW within 4-1 in the fourth.
Wooten had a two-run single in the fifth that was followed by a
Brooke McLemore RBI-single finished the scoring for the Lady
Hurricanes.
Brittany Milstid (2-4) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four runs
on six hits. Tiffany Milstid finished the game striking out five
and allowing three runs on four hits.
GSW will travel to Milledgeville on Thursday to play Georgia
College.
