Georgia Southwestern split a doubleheader against No. 12-ranked
Georgia College on Saturday afternoon at Hurricane Field to take
the three-game weekend Peach Belt Conference series two games to
one. GSW won game one on Saturday, 6-2. The Bobcats
took the nightcap, 13-6.
In the first game, GSW jumped on the Bobcats early with two runs
in the first inning on three hits. Bud Long had an RBI single and
Zack Stanton knocked in a run.
The Hurricanes added another two runs in the third on three
walks and two hit batters.
GSW picked up single runs in the fourth and the seventh.
After reaching base on a double, Shane Doyle was knocked home by
Jared Allen in the fourth. In the seventh, Chris Lingham
brought Kevin Carroll home with a RBI single after Carroll had
reached on a bunt single and advanced on a fielder's choice.
Georgia College scored two runs in the ninth to complete the
scoring.
Andrew Whiggum (2-2) threw eight innings, allowed the two runs -
neither was earned - surrendered four hits, walked three and struck
out three. Bud Fuller struck out three batters in the his one
inning of action. GCSU starter Dylan Lightell (0-2) pitched 2.2
innings, allowed four runs on three hits, walked three and struck
out three.
Lingham, Doyle, Allen and Long had two hits apiece for the
'Canes. Doyle had a double and scored two runs.
Georgia College scored seven runs in the second inning and
cruised to a 13-6 win in the nightcap.
Southwestern drops to 10-13 overall, 3-3 in the Peach Belt. GCSU
improves to 12-6, 4-2 in the PBC.
Richard Pirkle led off the second inning with a double for
Georgia College. A throwing error by the 'Canes allowed Matt Pitts
to reach base and advance to third. After the next two Bobcat
batters recorded outs, GCSU rattled off five consecutive hits and
finished the inning with a 7-0 lead.
GSW closed the gap to 7-3 with a three-run third inning
highlighted by Francisco Gomez's two-run single to right.
Georgia College added three more runs in the fourth, another two
in the fifth and one in the sixth to stretch their lead to ten runs
(13-3).
Southwestern would add two in the bottom of the sixth when
Stanton's RBI single to left rolled past Kyle Allen, all the way to
the wall, and allowed Stanton to circle the bases for the 'Canes
second run of the inning.
GSW added a run in the seventh off a solo home run by Doyle.
Hurricane starting pitcher Zach Whitman (2-2) took the loss
allowing seven runs - only one earned - in 1.2 innings. Clete
Jessup (2-0) pitched six innings, allowed five runs - three earned
- walked three and struck out nine.
Gomez led the 'Canes at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with two
RBI. Doyle went 2-for-4 with the home run.
Pirkle, Chandler Snell, Brooks Robinson, Derek Johns and Sean
Harrell had multi-hit nights for Georgia College.
The Hurricanes host Valdosta State on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
