'Canes surrender 33 hits over pair of losses to AASU

SAVANNAH - Georgia Southwestern left 21 men on base, and its pitching was beat up for 33 hits as Armstrong Atlantic swept Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 16-5 and 7-2.

The Pirates built an 11-1 lead in the first game after five innings, and they used a four-run sixth to put away the second game.

Bud Long had two hits in Game 1, and Zack Stanton drove in two runs, including a solo home run, which was his third of the season.

The Hurricanes (12-19, 4-7) were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position while the Pirates were 9-for-13.

Alex Wyche was 4-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI, and four other Pirates had two RBI.

R.M. Cozza (1-3) took the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing nine runs - four earned - on nine hits while striking out two and walking none. GSW used five pitchers in the contest.

Cody Walden (6-1) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on three hits to go with 12 strikeouts and two walks.

In Game 2, Josh Wilson, John Roberts and Michael Price all had three hits for Armstrong (22-8, 3-5); Wilson and Price also had doubles.

The Hurricanes didn't fare much better at the plate, going 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Heath Lock led GSW with three hits, and Long and Francisco Gomez each had two hits.

Zach Whitman (2-3) lasted 4.2 innings on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits. His counterpart, Jeff Chase, also pitched 4.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits.

Ryan Smith (3-0) got the win, pitching three innings of middle relief and allowing one run on two hits.

The two teams will finish the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
