Falcons score 6 runs in fifth and seventh
innings

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo Falcons exploded for six
runs in the fifth and seventh innings to go on for a 17-4 win
against Georgia Southwestern on Monday, taking 2 of 3 games in the
teams' opening series.
The Falcons (2-1) finished with 14 hits while the Hurricanes
(1-2) made three errors.
Francisco Gomez was 3-for-4 with a double on the day. GSW scored
all four of its runs in the second inning. Noble Coley's two-run
single to left field put GSW ahead 2-0, Jared Allen stole home and
Chris Lingham's single gave the Hurricanes a 4-0 lead.
Montevallo trailed 4-3 when it used three hits, two errors and
three free passes (walk, two hit batters) to take a 9-4 lead in the
fifth. Then in the seventh, the Falcons scored six on four hits, an
error and two more hit batters.
Tyler Daniel (0-1) took the loss, pitching an inning and
allowing three runs on three hits. The Hurricanes used five
pitchers, with Andrew Whiggum starting and going three-plus
innings.
The Hurricanes split Sunday's games, opening with a 5-3 loss
before taking the second game 5-1.
Lingham and Shane Doyle each had two RBI in Game 2, with Doyle's
coming on a double in a three-run second inning.
Lingham led four Hurricanes with multiple hits with three, and
he stole five bases; he finished with seven in the series.
Zach Whitman (1-0) pitched six innings allowing one run on five
hits to get the win.
Zack Stanton gave GSW a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI-single to
left. After Montevallo scored in the third to cut the deficit to
4-1, Lingham's second RBI pushed the lead back to four runs in the
fourth.
In the first game, Cody Adams hit a two-run homer in the fifth
to give GSW a 3-2 lead, but Montevallo responded with two runs in
the bottom half behind two GSW errors and a Cory Luckie sacrifice.
GSW had four errors in the game.
R.M. Cozza (0-1) pitched five innings, allowing four runs - two
earned - in taking the loss.
The Hurricanes will host a four-game series starting Friday
against West Alabama.
