Jordan Guida's two-run homer in the bottom of the 8th inning
lifted Florida Southern to a 6-4 win over Georgia Southwestern in
game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Hurricanes
Saturday at Henley Field. The Mocs won game one, 16-2.
FSC took the first game of the three-game set, 6-5, on Friday
evening.
In Saturday's nightcap, the Moccasins (13-4) took a 2-1
lead in the first on Robbie Shield's two-run homer with Trae Gore
aboard. After the Hurricanes tied it at 2-2 in the second, Gore
homered to give the Mocs a 3-2 lead.
Georgia Southwestern (8-12) sent the game, scheduled for
seven innings, into the extra frame as Zach Stanton homered
with two outs in the top of the seventh off Moccasin reliever Ken
Wadsworth (2-0). Guida then won the game for the Mocs in the bottom
of the 8th on the homer off GSW reliever Brandon Reeder (2-1).
In game one, Gore have five hits to lead a 22-hit Moccasin
attack and Zach Maggard had two homers and five RBI as the Mocs
clubbed five homers in the opener. Maggard's hit streak came to a
end at 15-game in game two. Wade Kirkland and Maggard each had four
hits for FSC while Shields and Nick Stanley each had three as the
Mocs' top five hitters in the line-up combined for 19 hits in 29 at
bats. Will Cherry also homered twice for the Mocs and also had
three hits.
Stephan Batman worked seven innings for the Mocs giving up nine
hits, but allowing just two runs, one earned, to pick up his third
win against one loss. Starter Andrew Whiggum (1-2) took the
loss for the Hurricanes.
GSW hosts Valdosta State on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
