Pensacola, FL - Friday afternoon's game was a great start to the
weekend for GSW Baseball as the Hurricanes took to the field
against Flagler College in a tournament hosted by the University of
West Florida.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third when Flagler's
Ray singled to center field and then scored on a wild pitch three
batters later. GSW answered right back when leadoff hitter Miles
Martin reached on an error and advanced to third after a single to
right field by Daniel Stokes. A sacrifice fly by Nick Rex scored
Martin and tied the game at 1. In the Hurricane fourth, Trey Reeves
singled to score Pat McCarthy and the Canes pulled ahead 2-1.
The Hurricanes used just 2 hits to score three in the bottom of the
seventh (Rex, Stokes, Daniel Lynn) to give GSW a 5-1 lead, but the
top of the eighth proved to be a tough one. Pitcher Andrew Whiggum
nicked the leadoff batter Kiture and then walked Simmons to put 2
runners on with no outs. Back to back singles scored Kiture and
Simmons scored on a fielder's choice. Center fielder Kampfer stole
home to score Flagler's third run of the inning, making the score
5-4.
GSW came back again in the bottom of the eighth when Daniel Stokes
tripled and scored on a single by Nick Rex, pushing the score to
6-4. Brandon Reeder came in to pitch in the ninth and gave up a
solo homerun to leadoff hitter Rivera. The next two batter struck
out swinging, but Kiture and Simmons each singled to put runners in
scoring position. Kampfer grounded into a fielder's choice to end
the inning and close out the game with the Canes on top 6-5.
Daniel Stokes went 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs to lead the
Hurricanes. Also adding hits for the Canes were Nick Rex, Daniel
Lynn, Zack Stanton, Byron Haynes, and Trey Reeves. Rex, Lynn,
Patrick McCarthy, and Miles Martin also scored for GSW.
The Hurricanes (2-5) face off against the University of
Alabama-Huntsville Saturday at 5:00 PM (CST).
