A penalty kick from freshman Jamie Kiep in the 83rd minute led
Georgia Southwestern to the program's first-ever Peach Belt
Conference victory in a 1-0 decision over USC Aiken on Saturday
afternoon at Hurricane Field.
The backline of senior Jonathan Smith, senior Christian Dane,
sophomore Robby Bartz and freshman Michael Morgan kept the USC
Aiken attack at bay the entire game and refused to buckle on a late
charge to post the first GSW shutout since the 'Canes defeated
LaGrange College 2-0 on September 22, 2006.
GSW sophomore goalkeeper John Scharnikow tallied seven saves while
recording his first collegiate shutout. Milad Zareian stopped one
for the Pacers. USCA (4-7, 1-3 PBC) outshot the Hurricanes 18-4 and
held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
GSW (2-11, 1-2) travels to Brewton-Parker on Wednesday for a 4 p.m.
non-conference match.
